James Atherton
Tenor

With MCS - Mozart Mass in C Minor, 11th November 2006

" ...James Atherton, who sang Evangelist with elegance and assurance."
JS BACH St. Matthew Passion - Chester Cathedral April 2003

James Atherton started his singing life as a chorister in Manchester. It was during this time that he developed his love for the English Choral repertoire. He subsequently spent time in the choirs of Chester and Lincoln and Winchester Cathedrals and is now a Lay Clerk in the choir of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, where he lives in the famous Horseshoe Cloister.

As a professional singer James has established himself as a consort tenor, working with such choirs as Sarum Voices, Armonico Tributo and the Edington Festival Consort. He has appeared with many orchestras including The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The English Concert and Charivari Agréable Symphonie.

Recent performances include Bach's Cantata Nr. 191, Britten's St Nicolas, Handel's Messiah and Samson, Haydn's Creation, the Vespers by Monteverdi and Rachmaninov, Serenade to Music by Vaughan Williams and Verdi's Sacred Songs. He is in demand as the Evangelist in Bach's Passions and appearances this year include St John in Ripon and Lincoln cathedrals and St Matthew in Chester Cathedral and St Mary's Warwick.

Future engagements include Handel Israel in Egypt, Bach Mass in B minor and a solo recital in the Vicars Hall at Windsor Castle.

When he is not singing, James works as an Organ Builder and Tuner for Matthew Copely Organ Design.
